Before you buy
Buying a conex box: what to know first
A conex box is a steel shipping container used for on-site storage, for shipping, or as the shell of an office or workshop. “Conex” began as a U.S. Army name for its steel shipping boxes and stuck, so today it covers any shipping container. These six decisions narrow down the right one.
-
Pick a size
8ft and 10ft units fit driveways and tight yards. The 20ft conex box is the most popular size because it balances space, cost and easy delivery. A 40ft doubles the floor space for well under twice the price, and the 45ft high cube is the longest we offer. Compare every size.
-
Choose new or used
New (one-trip) containers have made a single voyage and look close to factory-fresh, which suits offices and homes. Used conex containers cost less and are graded: cargo-worthy units can still ship, and wind and watertight units are sold for storage.
-
Buy, rent or rent-to-own
Buying makes sense when you need the container for the long run. Renting a conex suits short projects, renovations and seasonal overflow, and rent-to-own spreads the cost while each payment goes toward owning the unit.
-
Plan the delivery
Most containers arrive on a tilt-bed truck that slides the unit onto the ground, so the driver needs a firm, level spot with a long straight approach and room overhead. Share your ZIP code and site access when you request a quote so those details can be checked before delivery day.
-
Compare prices the right way
A container’s price depends on size, condition, grade and how far it travels to you. Compare delivered prices for the same grade, not just the price of the box. Our conex price guide explains what goes into a quote.
-
Customize it, if you need to
Add personnel or roll-up doors, windows, insulation, lighting, shelving or paint, or start from a fully fitted office conex. Every build is quoted from the base unit plus the work involved.

Good to know
A few useful answers.
What is a conex box?
A conex box is another name for a steel shipping container. The name comes from the U.S. Army’s “Container Express” boxes, and today it’s used for standard, high cube, open side, refrigerated and other container types in sizes from 8ft to 45ft. See every size and type.
What’s the difference between standard and high-cube?
High-cube containers offer extra interior height compared with standard containers of the same length. Exact dimensions can vary by unit.
How do I choose a container condition?
New units have little or no service history. Used units have been in service and vary in appearance. Customized units start from one of these and are modified for your project. Availability depends on size, so the condition list updates when you pick one. Ask for current photos and details of any unit.
What do container grades like “cargo-worthy” or “wind and watertight” mean?
Grades describe what a used unit is fit for. Cargo-worthy units are generally suitable for shipping, while wind and watertight units are intended for storage. Ask for current photos and grade details for any unit you’re considering.
Does the quote include delivery?
Delivery depends on your location, site access, and the container selected. Share your ZIP or postal code when requesting a quote so those details can be checked.
How much space do I need for a container delivery?
Plan for firm, level ground, a straight approach for the truck, and clear space overhead with no wires or branches. A 40ft container needs a much longer approach than a 20ft. Describe your site when you request a quote and we’ll confirm what’s needed.
Can I rent a conex box instead of buying one?
Yes. Most sizes can be rented or bought on a rent-to-own plan. See how conex rentals and rent-to-own work.
How much does a conex box cost?
It depends on the size, whether it’s new or used, its grade, and how far it has to travel to you. Read the conex price guide or request a quote for a delivered price.
