How Much Does a Conex Box Cost?

Conex prices depend on size, condition, grade, type and how far the container travels to you. Here are our prices and what goes into a delivered quote.

Conex box prices

Prices for the container only, before delivery and tax. A dash means that condition isn’t on our price list. Your quote confirms the delivered price to your ZIP code. Last checked Oct 2026.

What affects conex container prices

Size

Bigger costs more, but not proportionally: a 40ft usually costs well under twice as much as a 20ft, so it’s cheaper per square foot.

Condition and grade

New (one-trip) containers cost the most. Used prices fall from cargo-worthy to wind and watertight to as-is. See used conex grades.

Type

High cubes cost a little more than standard units. Open side, open top, flat rack, insulated and especially refrigerated containers cost more again, because they’re built in smaller numbers or carry machinery.

Delivery distance and site access

Delivery is priced on the distance from the depot and what the truck needs to reach your spot. Hard access, long distances or special equipment add cost.

Market conditions

Container prices move with global shipping demand and the supply of retired containers at local depots, so conex container prices can change from month to month.

Modifications and extras

Doors, windows, insulation, power, shelving and paint are quoted on top of the base unit, as are lock boxes and other accessories.

What a quote should include

A useful quote states the container’s size, type, condition and grade; the delivery charge to your ZIP code; any taxes and fees; and the delivery window. Compare delivered prices for the same grade, not just the price of the box.

Ways to save

  • Choose wind and watertight instead of cargo-worthy if you only need storage.
  • Pick standard height if you don’t need the extra foot of a high cube.
  • Make sure the truck can reach your spot easily.
  • Ask about current specials.
  • Consider rent-to-own to spread the cost.

Questions and answers

Do the prices include delivery?

No. Starting prices are for the container before delivery and tax. Your quote adds delivery to your ZIP code.

Why do container prices change?

They follow global shipping demand and local supply. When fewer containers are being retired near you, prices rise; when depots are full, they fall.

Are used containers much cheaper than new?

Usually, yes. How much cheaper depends on the grade and on local supply, so compare quotes for the same size and grade.

Do I pay sales tax on a container?

That depends on your state and how the container is used. Tax-exempt organizations can request a tax exemption with their certificate.
